AUTOGRASS! WHATS THAT?

Autograss is a form of motorsport. Cars race on an oval grass track, (which unsurprisingly, soon transforms to a dirt track!). There are twelve different classes of racing cars in Autograss. People always find a class that suits their wallet and their interest. There are standard 1000cc cars up to cars over 1421cc,.

There are also classes for “specials”, which are buggy type cars, which include engines up to 1420cc to over 2070cc, including v8's and twin bike engines!!!!, Junior drivers are aged between 12 and 16 years old, they can only drive saloon cars under 1000cc or a Junior Special up to 1200cc.

One thing we have noticed about Autograss in recent years is the growing number of junior racers joining our club. I have spoken to several parents of these juniors and asked them how and why they chose Autograss. The general feel was that it was the most affordable, family friendly and safest of motorsports, which they had seen.

Affordable because you could buy a car for under £1000 and gate fees are £3.50 junior and £7 full adult. A signing on fee for adult racers of £10  and only £6 for juniors makes it one of the cheapest, if not the cheapest motorsport in Northern Ireland.

Family friendly because we tend to race over a weekend. Providing facilities for people to bring their caravans, campers and tents.

Safest, because parents felt their child was more secure in a vehicle which had a roll cage around it, unlike motorbikes. The overall governing body of Autograss is N.A.S.A (National Autograss Sport Association). Check out the website for details of all cars you can use.         http://www.national-autograss.co.uk/information.html

As I mentioned before Autograss is one of the most affordable forms of motorsport. It is a family friendly sport, allowing 3 members of a family share one racing car, making the sport accessible and affordable to a very wide variety of people. As with every type of motorsport, you can spend as little or as much as you like on your car, but with Autograss, you could have a car, on the track, ready to race for £500 in total, if you are able to do some handy work yourself. If not, you could buy a second hand car ready to go for £1000 or less.
